A native of Ohio, SCOTT KIRBY began his study of music at the age of six, and continued formal piano instructions for the next seventeen years. His principal teachers were Robert Howat of Wittenberg University and Sylvia Zaremba at The Ohio State University. After earning an English degree from OSU, he moved to New Orleans and began his professional music career as a street performer. Within four years, he had recorded the complete rags of Scott Joplin, and made his debuts at all of the major ragtime festivals in the United States, as well as festivals in Belgium, France, Hungary, Norway and New Zealand.

Scott Kirby has served as Musical Director of the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival (Sedalia, MO) and the Rocky Mountain Ragtime and American Music Festival (Boulder, CO); he was also Director of the San Juan Islands Ragtime Institute. In addition to hundreds of public performances, he has been seen nationally on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, who said in 1998, “Critics call Scott Kirby one of the best interpreters of ragtime music on the scene today.” TIME magazine hailed him as an “ace pianist.”

In 2002, Scott Kirby appeared at WashingtonDC’s Smithsonian Institute, offering a program devoted to Scott Joplin. He also co-founded a record label (Viridiana Productions, L.L.C.) Has made 16 recordings and composed over 150 original works for piano and other instruments.

In 2005, Scott Kirby’s artistic passion expanded to include visual art, and, while living in France, he completed 75 paintings and 28 piano compositions, including The Prairie Devotionals. These paintings (components of a set entitled Visions of the Great Plains) and the new musical works set the groundwork for his new multi-media concert project, “Main Street Souvenirs.”

Scott Kirby makes his home in Boulder, Colorado, and divides his time among composing, painting, performing, touring and teaching.

SCOTT KIRBY’S

MAIN STREET SOUVENIRS: A Visual Concert

This is a multi-media stage performance featuring live piano music, a spoken narrative and a video presentation. The projected visual dimension of the program accompanies both the narrative and the music throughout, and consists of Scott’s original artwork, his video footage and his photography, as well as archival images. The narrative, written by Scott, reflects a thematic progression, weaving together various concepts of small town American life with musical, visual and literary examples that illustrate these themes (see program below). The music in the first half spans 150 years of Americana; the second half features Scott’s original compositions, paintings, photography, literary excerpts and a narrative, all exploring historical and visionary dimensions of the American Great Plains and Prairies.

(Below is Scott’s basic program, which can be tweaked for performances in different parts of the country, as well as for re-engagements.)
